THE THIRSTY CANDLE

Introduction- why does the water rise?

Procedure-
            1. Pour the coloured water in the plate.
2. Place the candle in the
3.light the candle
4. Place the flask on it
5. Observe

Explanation-
When the flame fades and goes out, the air in the container cools and cooler air contracts or takes up less space. That contraction creates a weak vacuum – or lower pressure – in the container. High pressure outside the container presses down on the water in the dish. The outside air pushes water into the container until the pressure is equalized inside and outside the container. The water stops rising when that pressure equalization is reached.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN ENERGY and POWER TECHNOLOGIES AND MANUFACTURING

There are numerous way of producing energy which has been listed in the topic sources of energy

EXAMPLE

ENERGY FROM THE SEA

TIDAL ENERGY

  • Depends upon the harnessing the rise and fall of sea level due to tidal action.
  • dams are constructed and turbines convert tidal energy into electrical energy.

WAVE ENERGY
  • kinetic energy of the waves of the sea are used to rotate the turbines.
  • this turbines generate electrical energy.

TECHNOLOGY IN MANFACTURING

In std VIII the chapter coal and petroleum consist of processes involving fractionisation of petroleum under REFINING PETROLEUM.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN TRANSPORTATION

Science and technology in transportation

Science and Technology has regularly changed transportation by making it quicker and more efficient.

        In the unit FRICTION

  • the replacement of sliding friction is done by the rolling friction with the use of ball bearing especially in bicycles.

  • the aeroplanes and other vehicles are designed in such a way that will reduce the fluid friction.
